I recently returned a much-needed family vacation to Walt Disney World. We had a fabulous stay at Disney’s most unique resort……Animal Kingdom Lodge. We fell in love with this resort! It was at the top of my list of resorts I wanted to try and I am so happy we did! The only word I can think of to describe this resort is amazing!!
I published a blog post last fall with a lot of details about Animal Kingdom Lodge which you can read here. Today, I want to tell you my personal experience at the resort.
We stayed in two standard view rooms in the Giraffe Trail section. I firmly believe that you can stay in a standard view room and still enjoy the resort as much as if you stayed in a savanna view room. We did just that! Although we didn’t stay in the amazing savanna view rooms, we really enjoyed this resort. Our rooms were located at the end of the hall, so it was very quiet. We were close to the lobby, transportation and restaurants. About a week before we left, I faxed a request to Animal Kingdom Lodge stating if any bunkbeds were available we would love to have them. Bunkbeds are only a bookable category in the pool view and savanna view rooms, but I knew that there were a limited number of standard view rooms with them. We ended up with bunkbeds in the girls room and two queen beds in the guys room. Kind of funny because the guys were the ones that really needed them, but with four of us girls in one room they ended up working out great for us. I took a couple hundred pictures of the animals but failed to take any pictures of our room because we arrived really late and were exhausted from travelling. Oops! You can see pictures of the rooms on my previous post.
The decor of Animal Kingdom Lodge is very exotic. There are African themed decorations throughout the resort. There is artwork on the walls and doors, even the ceilings and floors. There are some cool sculptures. It is definitely the most unique Disney resort.
The lobby is located on the 3rd floor with a huge picture window that overlooks 30 acres of land. There, you can exit the back of the lobby which leads to Arusha Rock, an elevated area for viewing the animals on the Arusha Savanna. We spent quite a bit of time there watching the giraffes, zebras and other animals who live there. They had a fire pit in the evening where we roasted marshmallows. There were also guides at the animal viewing areas to answer questions. There are additional areas to view the Sunset Savanna and Uzima Savanna. One night we were talking to one of the guides and found out that the oldest giraffe living at the resort is 30 years old! She walks with a limp because she has a problem with one of her legs. She is beautiful as you can see in the close up picture below. I am now totally obsessed with giraffes!
We planned some down time this trip so we could enjoy the resort. The kids really enjoyed the zero-entry Uzima pool. In the evening Disney movies were shown on a blow-up screen next to the pool.
We ate at The Mara, the quick-service location, several times. The food was good. There were choices with African influences and simple items like flatbreads. It is located next to Uzima pool and has some outside seating. Very convenient if you are at the pool with the kids and want to grab a quick snack or meal. I did finally get to try the famous Zebra Domes. Delicious! Definitely a must-try if you stay at this resort.
We ate at Boma, one of the table-service locations, twice for breakfast. We really enjoyed it. The food was delicious, service was great, and they serve Jungle Juice which is also served at Tusker House in Animal Kingdom park. This restaurant is now on my list of recommended restaurants for my clients. By the way, if you have never had the Jungle Juice you definitely need to try it. Delicious!
A couple pictures of Boma…….
A couple times we noticed some kids activities being held in the lobby. One morning several kids were sitting on the floor near the doors doing rubbings of the floor. Another day there was music and kids dancing in a parade around the lobby. The kids were loving it!
We really enjoyed our stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge. We cannot wait to return! Have you stayed at this resort? I would love to hear your comments!
